Fisher House at Dayton VA Mission

There’s nothing more powerful than a family’s love and support to speed the healing process. When our servicemen and servicewomen need medical care, their families undergo tremendous stress, and most often seek to be close by to support their loved ones on their physical and emotional journey. However, costs for lodging, food and transportation make it difficult for family members to stay close by for extended periods, while care is being provided.

Since 1990, Fisher Houses have answered this critical need, by giving great comfort and support to our service members, veterans, and their families—enabling them to be together while undergoing treatment and recovery. A Fisher House is truly a home away from home, providing the right healing environment for both the patient and their family.

The Fisher House Foundation is known worldwide for building a network of compassionate care facilities where active duty and retired military and veterans can stay at no cost while receiving outpatient treatment. Their families can also stay at no cost while a loved one is undergoing medical care. These homes are located at major military and VA medical centers, in close proximity to the hospitals they serve. Each house is configured with up to 21 suites, each with a private bathroom, a shared common kitchen, laundry facilities, dining room, and an inviting living room with a library and toys for children.

Fisher Houses typically cost $4-6 million to build, with the majority of the cost funded by the Fisher House Foundation. Today, there are 71 located in the United States and Germany, with several more under construction. Since inception, the program has served more than 307,000 families, with a savings in out-of-pocket transportation and lodging expenses of over $320 million. In 2016 alone, 30,000 families were served, with $49 million saved.

The Dayton VA Medical Center currently has an acute need for a compassionate care facility, as none exist within any reasonable distance from the Center. In answer to that need, Vicki and Randy Gunlock and their Greener Pastures Foundation have generously pledged over $1 million for a Fisher House at the Dayton VA Medical Center, and planning is currently underway. However, this extraordinary gift comes with a challenge to raise an additional $500,000 to help the local supporting nonprofit organization (Fisher/Nightingale Houses, Inc.) fund annual operations and other support costs.

Giving back to those who have sacrificed so much for all of us is the ultimate means to thank our veterans. So, we ask that you please donate today, and help us give our servicemen, servicewomen, veterans and their families the comfort they deserve in times of need.

DJ Rob Sample - Rob Sample is one of Toledo, Ohio’s most respected Djs. He started spinning in mid 1999 on off nights at local bars and night clubs. After developing his own style eventually moved on to weekends in some of Toledo’s bigger night clubs. By 2003 Rob had done over 2 dozen night clubs in Toledo and started getting calls to do even bigger night club grand openings(Banana Joes, Tabu, Metro, Ground Zero). In 2004 92.5 KISS Fm WVKS Toledo invited him to do a nightly mix show 100% LIVE on air and he gladly accepted (Club Kiss). Six months later Rob then spent some brief time in Chicago djing store openings in big malls and smaller underground bars and night clubs in the area (Windsor Fashions, Spot 6). Upon his return to Toledo Hot 97.3 Fm had him do mix shows for the holidays as they were just breaking new grounds with the radio station (Memorial Day Mix Down and 4th of July Mix Down). In that point of his career he had already played for two radio stations opened for major recording artists like Mystikal (Jive Records), Proof (D12 – RIP), T-Pain (Jive Records), Danny The Wild Child (Q101 Chicago), Dj Seven (Chicago Disco Pimps), and Stacey Kidd (Camouflage Chicago). Don’t get it twisted even though Rob has spun quite a few hip/hop gigs his favorite music to get booked to play is still Funky House and Electro House and he is more explosive to watch when doing so.

Now it’s 2011 and Rob has done over 40 different local clubs and has played in Cincinnati, Oh. (Mad Frog), Augusta, Ga. (Argos, Modjeska), Chicago, IL. (Spot 6), Detroit, Mi. (Club 22, The Works, Corktown Tavern), Ann Arbor, Mi. (The Necto) Las Vegas Nv (Eye Candy, Riviera Penthouse). He also has returned to 92.5 Kiss Fm, doing Freestyle Fridays every Friday morning on the Andrew Z In The Morning Show and most recently The BeatFreaks every Saturday Night. You can catch him frequently mixing live on www.ustream.com and is one of the newest members to Bang Tech 12 (as of 2008). Come check this guy out anytime you see his name on a flyer, you’re sure to be impressed with his quick cuts, smooth blends and artistic style of mixing.

The Menus - They felt a little out of place at first, a rock 'n' roll cover band selling themselves next to corn dog vendors and Tilt-a-Whirl drivers. But they wanted to play outside this summer. Somewhere different. Somewhere where people don't yet know about their singer who looks a little like Jim Morrison, if Jim Morrison had worn sunflower bonnets and platinum wigs.

So there they were — the Menus, Cincinnati's pride-of-the-west-side cover band — spending two days in January in Nationwide Arena in Columbus. It was the Ohio State Fair trade show, where music acts, food vendors and carnies compete for the attention of the farmers who plan the state's 88 county fairs.

The first day was a little slow. Tim Goldrainer, that singer, admits they looked around at the clowns, country acts and a fried-cheese guy and asked themselves what in the hell they were doing there.

But Day Two was another story. The five-member band got 18 minutes to demonstrate what Menus fans have grown to accept and love over almost two decades. Mr. Goldrainer squeezed in four costume changes and demonstrated his trademark balloon-breaking kicks that leave the stage showered in confetti.

And he's booked to sing “Brandy” in his blue-flowered nightie at the Perry County Fair.

It was classic Menus: A little bit of business, a little weirdness. But weirdness that works.

“They loved it,” Mr. Goldrainer says. “We knew, as soon as they saw us, they would. That's what we do — we win people over.”

FAQ’s

Play by the rule? How do you find them?
We provide large signs in the park with the game rules displayed on them, we also have individual rules next to each game listing at austinlanding.com/gamenight

How much?
Nada! Our games are FREE of charge! All we ask is that you leave the games as you found them and set them up for the next group of players to enjoy after you are done.

Why aren’t the games out this weekend?
We will try to put the games out every weekend this summer, however we may not have them out on big events weekends (see our events calendar) or on weekends that predict heavy rain.

Are the games safe for all ages?
We require all children under the age of 16 to be supervised by an adult. Our game pieces are made out of hard material such as wood and heavy plastic. Austin Landing is not responsible for any accidents that happen in the park, please play games in a respectful and safe manner.
